Fitting Instructions

Step 1 of 8 – Safety (please do not skip this step)

Use a wire/pipe power detector to ensure that there are no electrical cables or water pipes in the wall where you intend to position the shelf. You do not want to electrocute yourself, or flood your house!

Step 2 of 8 – Vertical positioning of your shelves

Use a tape measure or your spirit level to mark the vertical position for your wall shelf with a pencil. Your mark should be for the top of the shelf bracket and bottom of the shelf.

Step 3 of 8 – Draw a level line

Use the spirit level and a pencil to draw a perfectly horizontal line along the area of the wall where you intend to mount the shelf. If your spirit level has a measure on it, draw the line to the full length of the shelf. If not, use a tape measure and redraw the line a couple of times, until it is the same length as the shelf.

Step 4 of 8 – Mark positions for the brackets

The positioning of the brackets is down to personal preference. Work out where you want to position the brackets and mark these positions on your horizontal line. Focussing on one bracket at a time, offer the top of the bracket up to the horizontal line and centre on your positioning mark. Keeping the bracket perfectly still, use a pencil to mark the screw holes on the wall (this is usually easier as a two-person job). Repeat this operation for each of the brackets.

Step 5 of 8 – Drill into the wall

Use a wood drill bit for studded or plasterboard walls or masonry bit for stone, brick or breezeblock walls. Drill into the walls on the dead centre point of all your screw hole markings. Drill the holes deep enough into the wall to fully accommodate the rawl plugs.

Step 6 of 8 – Insert rawl plugs

Insert the rawl plugs into the drilled holes. Ensure that the rawl plugs are fully inserted and that they all sit flush to the wall – tap gently with a hammer if necessary. If any of your rawl plugs are sticking out, they will prevent your bracket from sitting flush to the wall when mounted.

Step 7 of 8 – Fix brackets to the wall

Screw the wooden or chrome shelf brackets to the wall using a screwdriver and countersunk screws.

Safety tip – Ensure you use long sturdy screws and applicable rawl plugs. These will be taking all the weight of your shelf and its items.

Step 8 of 8 – Fix shelf to brackets

Position shelf to the supporting brackets and ensure it is level and sitting equidistant on the brackets. If using chrome shelf brackets, use a screwdriver and countersunk screws to fix brackets to the underside of shelf.

If using wooden shelf brackets, apply a small amount of strong wood glue to the top edge of each of the supporting brackets. Position shelf accordingly, remove any excess glue and allow to dry. Either apply weight to the shelf during glue drying time or use suitable clamps if you possess them.
